About
About Shashi Middle School, located in the Shashi district of Jingzhou City, is one of the top high schools in Hubei Province. The school has been named a model school of Hubei by the provincial government five times, and has the top students in the city. Jingzhou is located directly on the Yangtze River in the heart of Hubei Province. The city has a long history, a well-preserved ancient city wall, and several ancient temples. Jingzhou also played an important role during the Three Kingdoms period of China.

We are looking for a conversational English teacher for the 2007-2008 school year.
We offer:
1. Private, furnished accommodation with bathroom in on-campus teachers dormitory. Housing includes television, DVD player, A/C, phone, and computer with internet. All rent and utilities paid by school. All meals included.

3. 6+ weeks of paid vacation during the school year, corresponding to Chinese holidays (1 week in October, 4+ weeks in January/February, 1 week in May.)
4. 18-20 teaching hours a week (about 22 classes), Monday-Friday, plus English Corner one day a week.
5. Each class is 45 minutes long, and has around 60 students. Students are 15-17 years old.
6. The teacher will have quite a bit of freedom in choosing which textbook to use, what activities to do in class, etc. No homework, tests or grading required.
7. School will arrange a work visas

We require:
1. American citizen, native English speaker
2. College graduate, some teaching experience preferred
3. Enthusiasm for helping kids improve their spoken English and an interest in China and Chinese culture.

Jingzhou is a medium-size city of about 1 million people. It is the ideal city if you want a more authentic China experience. There are very few foreigners and the culture is less westernized that many big cities. The cost of living is also considerable cheaper than many large cities in China.

One more comment (coming from the current foreign teacher): I highly recommend a public high school over the private training centers or language schools. I know from experience that the private schools are often mainly concerned about profits, not helping the students. In addition, private schools sometimes do not have permission to hire foreign teachers and may have to undertake unethical or illegal measures to have a foreign teacher. This is not an issue with a public school. Therefore, I would strongly recommend a public school for your China teaching experience.

If you are interested in this position or have any questions, please contact Katy (the current foreign teacher) at shashimiddleschoolgmail.com. Please attach your resume, a copy of your degree and a recent photo or passport photo page.
